Until 1961, the town was known as Major Alves Rodrigues, named after the only educated man in the region. After its emancipation, it was renamed Major Gercino, in honor of the officer and teacher who contributed significantly to its development. The town, settled by Italians, Portuguese-Brazilians, Germans and Poles, is renowned for its artisanal wines and champagne production.
