Until 1961, when it ceased to be a district, it was called Major Alves Rodrigues, in honor of the only man with some education in the place. From then on, its status and name changed, but its military rank remained the same. After its emancipation, it became Major Gercino, in tribute to the officer and professor at the Florian\u00f3polis School of Pharmacy who worked so hard to make this happen. The city was colonized by Italians, Portuguese-Brazilians, Germans and Poles. Good, artisanal wine is the specialty of the descendants of Italians who live there. In addition to red and white flavors, they produce champagne.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Of the 278.1 km2 of the municipality, 90% are occupied by vineyards and the remaining 10% are peach trees, which supply the coast of Santa Catarina. In total, 1,000 tons of grapes are harvested per year, of which half is used to produce colonial wine. The remainder is sold in Greater Florian\u00f3polis and on the coast through Ceasa. The 590 rural properties in Major Gercino also grow tobacco, corn, cassava, oilseeds, and raise poultry, pigs, and beef and dairy cattle.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
